From our friends at PartyFoul…Playing Painted

Party Foul WMH

Recently Malorian made a new years resolution to Play Painted. I personally have been playing painted for years now, but his decision to commit to playing painted inspired me to write this article about the subject.

Warmachine is a game that is strong enough in it’s design and compelling enough in its interactions that it draws in players from competitive meta’s that don’t necessarily have a basis in the painting and hobby aspect of the game. Likewise some people who play the game find themselves with little time to paint with the general pressures of life, and it can be difficult for them to find the motivation to paint their models.

I certainly don’t have any magic solutions to find people the time or motivation to paint their models, but I’m going to try! The benefits and sense of personal accomplishment are well worth the effort!

Here is another great write up from our friends over at the

This day, which has come for many before I, Has finally come. Today, I was finally able to get my inflictors. I have now joined the ranks of those many Cryxian Warlords who can be protected from the slings, arrows and bullets of outrageous fortune. It is a day I have looked forward to for a very, very long time. I’ve got two lists I’ve been eyeing for a long time, and I finally get to take a chance on both of them. I’ve talked a few times about them here, but I’ve been working on one of them continuously. Even today I’ve changed it. Lets take a look at my current, probably stupid, Lich Lord Terminus list.

Lich Lord Terminus is one of my favorite casters, and has been since his MKI days. Though he isn’t as bone crushingly awesome as he used to be, I think he has a lot of potential as a caster to try and break some of our gun line woes. He isn’t going to be perfect, but I think he has some game.

from our friends at the – The Necrotechs Workshop XX – The Gunline Problem

The Coven, as ones who have perused this column on more than a slight occasion will have noticed, are getting a lot of play from me. Its not a situation unique to me, or my meta. The Coven are getting the nod from players -those that are left of our now decimated population – across the country. I’ve opened dialogue with a few of them, and many are of the same mindset. The Coven is the answer to the gunline.

I disagree. Come, let me explain. This one is a little wordy and rambling, so be warned.

List Pairing for Tournament Season

steamrollerI am finally taking the plunge into the tournament scene for Warmachine and Hordes.  I have been playing consistently at my LGS and have been in 3 tournaments locally, one of which I placed 3rd.  This will be the first time I am traveling a good distance for an event so I am very excited to see how well I can do in someone else’s back yard.  I wanted to write a small article on my 2 lists that I have been playing for a while and my thoughts as to why I really enjoy what they can do.  If you follow my Twitter feed (@MangledMetal) you should see photos from the event as well as my rants on how things turn out for the day.

So on with the important stuff…

For this tourney my first list, the all comers list, is a pSkarre list.

I know the rave (and justifiable) is the 30 Bane Knight version but I want to be able to have multiple different threats in my list composition.  30 Banes is very good for what is needed but everyone knows that list and I would like to bring something more to the table.  With a lot of speed and accuracy the units in this list can tackle whatever is in their path.  Skarre can come in a put things over the top with FEAT and Dark Guidance if she needs to but this list will allow her to play back a little bit more than normal.

IMG_20151025_205403I really like Bane Riders in this list and how they can do surgical strikes on those annoying Solo’s or lower the boom on a heavy.  God forbid on FEAT turn they come swinging at P+S 20 with reach.  Ghostly is absurd with Heavy Cav and with them in the list having 2 units with Ghostly allows for things to happen that you just don’t expect.

With the amount of Pathfinder or Ghostly in this list terrain is my greatest alley.  If I win the roll to go first I have even more power than normal.  30 Banes has the same thing but with AD Satyxis Raiders followed up by Bane Knights and Bane Riders on the other side I will have a strong command on the scenario.  If my opponent wins the roll they need to be careful on the choice they make. “Never let Cryx go first” is a fair statement but you may not want to let me pick the side either.  You may get held up and still take two turns to get there giving me the alpha anyway.

Skarre has a different style of control, she takes what she wants.  But with the Blood Witches in the list they add upkeep control and with their mini feat of going incorporeal for a round they can really mess up someone’s plans in a hurry.  And don’t forget Entropic Force making Trolls a bunch of sad pandas.

I really like what Cankerworm brings to the table for Skarre.  Doesn’t need12171662_10204063743028533_89631700_o much focus early, can deliver itself with ease and can on feat turn make any model shake in its boots.  Of course the little dirt dolphin, Helldiver, is an awesome threat piece that once again will deliver itself to the fight.  Never needing focus until it comes up from the ground to lay the smack down.

The next list is a Goreshade 3 list built for high assassination threat.

12042102_10203967477141946_1644712724_nWhat I wanted in a 2nd list is shear speed and the ability to drop a caster on my 2nd turn.  Goreshade 3 can make that happen in spades.  Once again I looked at a couple of key factors in my list development to insure I could accomplish my goal.

This list does not care about anything getting in its way.  Whether a tree, a rock, a house or enemy models.  It will find you caster, it will deliver death upon you.

This list, even with its low model count, can put the hurt on just about anything.  Multiple attacks from the Soulhunters, High damage output from Bane Riders and a Kraken sped up with Infernal Machine are just the beginning.  Goreshade brings Scything Touch to the game that he can easily juggle to all of his minions.  With already good ability to bring the pain this is the cherry on top of the ice cream Sunday. Not to mention a Kraken with a threat of 14” hitting you like a truck from downtown or shooting its guns as you are frozen in place.

12048601_10203967476901940_2020891505_nSometimes having more options is a bad thing.  My thoughts for an all out assasination list is be focused and give your self the time to find the checkmate move with less distractions.  With only 21 models in the list it is streamlined to do one thing the best and that would be find the caster and take them down.  Yes the list can attrition with Mockery of Life and its ability to deal with infantry but why worry about pushing a ton of models when you have a small amount of active so you give yourself every opportunity to find the assasination.

IMG_20150904_191307Goreshade 3’s strength o his feat needs to be exploited IMO.  All of my units can find a way to get to the caster to then be feated on.  One of the best units for this is Blackbanes Ghost Raiders.  Small based, super fast, incorperal denizens of the Cryx army are so good for this list it isn’t even funny.  They can replace their own ranks, have Mockery of Life keep their numbers safe and even if you only have one left and out of position you can still manage to use Soulhunters or the Bane Riders to come in from the back door.

All in all I really like both of these list and I feel the complement each other very well.  My only reservation is my lack of experience in tournament settings.  More specifically list chicken stage of the game.  I feel I know what I want to drop into certain lists/factions but I know theory crafting is still theory.  I need a lot more play time in general with the game as a whole to really know what I should be worried about, but then again I play Cryx…

An Interview with Emanuel Class of Removed From Play

One of the best things about WarmaHordes is the community.  Yes the game is great on so many aspects but the community far surpasses anything you could imagine.  One day after listening to the Removed from Play podcast Episode 2 from Hand Cannon Online where Emanuel Class talks about pSkarre (my personal favorite) on the show I reached out to him on Facebook.  I was just wanting to give him some quick feedback on how I enjoyed the episode.  After a few hours of chatting we ended up talking about doing an interview for Mangled Metal Tactics!  I was super stoked.  Not only did I get to chat with someone about a game that we both enjoy but get to ask some of those questions that friends at your LGS might ask.

Here is what we went with…and I agree about Haley…

Get to know basics

  1. What was your gateway drug into gaming?

Hmmm checkers? Chess? Monopoly? Haha I’ve been gaming as long as I’ve been able to understand the rules. I graduated games as I got older.

  1. At what age?

When I was 10 my school bus would drop me off in front of a local game store. I spent most of my time after school there learning blood bowl, 40 k, etc…

  1. Who introduced you to WarmaHordes?

A press ganger pulled me into a demo while waiting for someone to show up to practice Magic the Gathering for an Open in 2009

  1. How did you get into Podcasting with Omnus?

We started writing articles together way back in the day. Then one day we both ended up as guest’s hosts on the Trollblood Scrum podcast to discuss Legion. We realized we had good synergy and then moved onto creating RFP

  1. What future podcasting ventures do you have on the horizon, whether a solo project or group?

RFP U or RFP University is my current project. It is my local gamers getting together to record games and then post them to YouTube with a mystery science theater style commentary overlaid to the video. Entertaining and educational.

  1. How are you able to get in any games in with Work/Family/Commitments as well as paint?

I only sleep about 4 hours a night which leaves me 20 hours to be productive a day. That’s 28 hours a week I grind more than the average person. Aside from that everything is scheduled in advance with my team. We know what, when and where we are playing a week in advance.

  1. The person you want to play against…

I love playing the Privateer Press Employees. My games vs Michael Plummer and Will Hungerford are some of the most fun I’ve ever had. PP employees always try to make time for people at cons even when they are super busy.

The one you hate playing against?

Nit Picky players who seek to be argumentative about everything, Sore losers, Rage quitters, Grudge players, irrational players.

  1. Advice for new/old players in WarmaHordes?

New players: Have fun don’t worry about winning. Just try to learn.

Old Players: Study. Knowledge is the power to make educated decisions.

  1. Which is more satisfying, playing in a high level tourney or judging one?

Playing all day. I like to watch games ring side. I don’t want to judge them if I don’t have to. Not that there is anything wrong with it. But I want to play!

  1. Just how many factions have you jumped into and which do you feel drawn to the most?

I have played every faction but CoC and Minions. I feel most drawn to the Warmachine factions but Cryx and Menoth are my home factions.

The good stuff

  1. Favorite TV show?

This may be too tough to answer. To make it simple I’ll go with what’s current. Favorite TV show being aired, Agents of Shield.

  1. Bacon or Sausage…which is the meat of the gods?

Both? Bacon wrapped Sausage? I’d have to give the edge to bacon. It’s a food and a condiment.

  1. Booth Babes…Pro or Con?

Pro. My wife is a cosplayer. She wants to be there as much as players want to come meet her at the booth. Plus who doesn’t want more women at Cons?

  1. Nightwretch or Deathripper?

Both? Verity is the spice of life. If I only get to choose one I’d say Nightwretch. Guns in Cryx can be harder to come by then melee. It also doesn’t encourage you to get your Arc Node engaged

  1. Sorcha/Haley/Denny…Marry/Fuck/Kill??? And Why?

Oh my, this is quite a question. Marry Denny, make love to Sorcha, Kill Haley?

  1. Calandra/Vayl/Morvahna…Marry/Fuck/Kill??? And Why?

…this one may be even more awkward. Marry Morvahna, Make love to Vayl, Kill Calandra because EE.

  1. Fury, Focus, Induction…what is the more powerful mechanic?

Fair and balanced all the way across. My personal preference. Focus.

  1. ADR…long term tournament variation or fad?

I like specialist, I like the idea of ADR, I don’t like that it throws a balance issue into the game that did not exist. If one faction gets a particularly powerful ADR and a different faction gets a particularly bad ADR. The latter is at a distinct disadvantage to the former with no balancing factor.

  1. Divide and conquer…a must or a bust?

Neither. I think it’s great to encourage players to consider two list pairings and match ups more. However I don’t like the idea of being list locked in the finals because you saw all of X arch types and none of Z arch types so you are forced to play into a bad match up you wouldn’t otherwise play.

  1. People use War Room during games…How about dice apps on phones as well?

War Room is great I love it. However I have broken away from using it for games. As far as dice apps go. I’d say no way. People already have a problem with “fishy” dice. It would only get worse as we start accusing people of rigged dice apps.

The serious stuff

  1. Current Casters you are playing and there lists?

I play a little of everything but I like to mix and match depending on the day. I will give you my top 5. Skarre 1, Lich 2, Denny 1, Denny 2, Shade 2 with shade 3 coming in a very close 6th behind shade 2. My lists are subject to change and change often. These will likely all change to some degree before I play them next based on who I pair them with. Some lists undergo drastic change based on their pairing.

  1. What match ups do you look for in each opposing list to drop against?

Hmm this is another tough question most of the time I look at 3 factors when I am looking at my opponents lists.

Stats: do they have a particular stat I can abuse. If an opposing list or pair has lots of a specific stat like ARM, DEF, etc I can target that. If they are missing things like MAT or RAT fixers, I can target that.

Tools: what tools do I have that overcome their lists? What tools do they have to overcome mine?

Likely Drop: I have played so much, from so many different factions, I can guess what my opponent should drop with a 9/10 accuracy ratio.

What’s that one favorite list (no matter the faction) you have had the most success with…whether in enjoyment of playing or # of victories had and why? Another Tough Question. I would say I really enjoy my Harbinger and Lich 2 lists that I’ve taken to Cons. My lich 2 lists is the list I played exclusively during the team tournament at the 2015 LVO

–    Monolith Bearer – Monolith Bearer 2

  1. If you only had 2 casters to play ever…who would they be and why?

Lich 2, Denny 2. You could play them forever and never find the bottom of their tool bag they are both dynamic and complex.

  1. Most overpowered faction and how do you handle them?

Circle, Aim to dismantle specific tools. Plan to out play. Practice, practice, practice.

  1. Most overpowered model in the game as a whole and why?

I don’t know there is any one model that is particularly “OP” per say but the Storm Wall, Galleon, and Earth breaker come to mind in regards to single models with high power levels.

  1. Do you feel that an Mk 3 will happen next or a Mk 2.5?

I think either is fine. I’d be more partial to Mk 2.5 as I think MK 3 with major changes to the game would likely take steam out of the competitive scene for a while.

  1. How do you feel that video streaming/recording of games has truly impacted the game?

I think it has done wonders for the game. It educates and connects players from all over. There was a time when you could go online and watch someone from various places in the world playing chess. I’d like to be there one day.

  1. Will there be true Pro WarmaHordes players in the near future?

Depends on your definition of Pro. If you mean people getting paid to exclusively play Warmachine. Maybe?  But not likely. If you mean players that dedicate 40+ hours a week to the game and its media and go to cons specifically to prove they are the best and win a title. Then I’d say those people already exist. Tell me how many top end players can you name?

  1. What is the next goal for you as a player in the competitive scene?

Win a WMW masters qualifier.

I would like to thank Emanuel for taking a few moments out of his busy schedule to chat with a guy like me about a game like this.  Community…Friends…Competition…nothing is better when you can BS someone and it transcends what we deal with in our normal everyday lives.  Now I just need to work on only sleeping for 4 hours a day…
