From our friends at PartyFoul…Playing Painted

Party Foul WMH

Recently Malorian made a new years resolution to Play Painted. I personally have been playing painted for years now, but his decision to commit to playing painted inspired me to write this article about the subject.

Warmachine is a game that is strong enough in it’s design and compelling enough in its interactions that it draws in players from competitive meta’s that don’t necessarily have a basis in the painting and hobby aspect of the game. Likewise some people who play the game find themselves with little time to paint with the general pressures of life, and it can be difficult for them to find the motivation to paint their models.

I certainly don’t have any magic solutions to find people the time or motivation to paint their models, but I’m going to try! The benefits and sense of personal accomplishment are well worth the effort!

Karchev the Terrible

BIG, RED, STOMPY, SLOW ROBOTS!  That’s what I initially think of when I think of Khador.  But we all know about Karchev and his spell Tow.  He can have up to 3 Jack’s, at the end of his movement, place themselves in his back arc.  The thing to remember is it is friendly Jacks not his battle group.  Pair him up with the new Journeyman Warcaster for Khador Malakov and you now have a sling shot the has a threat of over 18″!  So much for slow.  But what Jacks to take?  I have placed in the battlegroup the Behemoth and a Spriggan while Malakov has Beast 09 in his.  You now have 3 very versitile Jacks that can capitalize on almost any situation.  Karchev may not support his army but his Jacks will.  The Spriggan with Bulldoze will clear a path for Beast 09 to then use his reach for more threat or the Spriggan can use his Targeting Flare to point out where something is to the rest of the army.  The Behemoth now has a 29″ threat on his guns and can still boost the to hits or not move 6″ and aim for better accuracy.  To round out the slaughter I have put in Doom Reavers and a Greylord Escort, Fenris and Alexia Ciannor & the Risen.  Lots of damage and path clearing from the Reavers as well as targets for Malakov’s Sucker ability.  He could even Sucker Alexia who will then dump that to her Risen.  In essence giving Malakov a 10″ Sucker option.  Plus the Reavers will die and hopefully charge up Alexia with souls if her opponent hasn’t already done that.  Which in turn makes more weapon masters in the form of Thrall Warriors.  For what Khador is thought of as being slow, I think this will make people take a look in their rear view mirrors before they get lapped by the big red machine.

Kommander Zoktavir, The Butcher Unleashed

The best of my experience is with Cryx.  But I started out looking at Khador.  Big, red, stompy robots was a very cool image that was presented to me by my play group. @SteveLickman of is where I drew my early fascination of the game.  I saw what he was doing and how things interacted and it really got me into the game.  Then he went and got Butcher3 and a Conquest.  I started to like him a little less after that.  But still it opened a whole new world and made me think of what would I do if I played Khador and had those models.  @SteveLickman has already “unleashed” this on our group but I wanted to run my thoughts on this as a tribute to my friend.  I call this list “Chaos”.  The butcher comes in with a Grolar in his battlegoup with all of his dogs.  With everyone trying to stay away from Butcher a nice ranged piece might fit good for him.  Energize for 3 inches after Madelyn Corbeau gave him an additional 3 inches is pretty sick.  Now the ranged threat went from 8 inches aiming (RAT 6 now) to 14 inches aiming!  and a ROF 5 POW 12 gonna put some beat down. The Conquest being run by Andrei Malakov with the aid of 6 Mechanics should keep him and the Conquest in good shape.  Alexia should be popping out a lot of Thrall Warriors from the Butcher going off to the Grolar beating face with his Piston Hammer.  I see this list winning a lot on scenario.  Being able to keep a lot of things at bay with multiple avenues of threat is its strength.  Fast Iron Fang Pikeman with the Black dragon UA and Iron Fang Kovnik to a Grolar moving up 10 inches on a charge with help from the team.  This build could get paired up with a Vlad2 Gun Line to really list chicken people.  Prepare for a cold and bloody battle when the Butcher comes knocking with a little Chaos…
